The Nation has partially transitioned more than half of its land base to the Kahkewistahaw Land Code through the First Nations Land Management Act, which was signed and established in 2011.
The Nation is a signatory to the Operational Framework Agreement on the First Nations Land Management Act, allowing the Nation control over their own lands and resources by means of the adoption of a Land Code.
In becoming a signatory community to the Framework Agreement, KFN assumes the administration and full lawmaking authority of its AREA (HA) 16,096.87 11,255.49 4,841.38 % 100.00 % 69.92 % 30.08 % reserve lands, environment, and natural resources, when KFN ratifies its respective Land Code.
In doing so, First Nations and KFN have been removing the colonial structures and frameworks supported by the Indian Act and claiming their right to self-govern and exist as sovereign peoples.
Having established its own Land Code (2011) and Comprehensive Community Plan (2020), the Nation has now looked towards establishing a Land Use Plan to assist in long-term planning of its evolving and growing land base.
